Develop Your Sign Painting Skills with the 1st Semester 8-Week Sign Painting Course of Alex Kurakake - LA Trade Tech Sign Alumni & Sign Instructor of Smart Alex Hand-Painted Signs
Hand-painted signs bring a level of personality, artistry, and craftsmanship that cannot be duplicated by mass-produced graphics. The 1st Semester 8-Week Sign Painting Course by SMART ALEX SIGNS, taught by Alex Kurakake, LA Trade Tech Sign Alumni and Hand-Painted Sign Artist, introduces students to the core skills of traditional sign painting, including lettering, brush techniques, brush control, composition, consistency, and confidence. Designed for beginners and artists who want to improve their abilities, this hands-on course provides a solid foundation for developing traditional sign painting skills.
LEARN THE VALUES OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SIGN PAINTING
Creating quality hand-painted signs begins with a strong understanding of the fundamentals. The first semester teaches students lettering, sign layout, spacing, basic brush strokes, paper signs, and other essential techniques, helping them understand how each element works together to create balanced and visually appealing hand-painted signs.
These core skills establish a solid foundation that students can continue developing throughout future semesters.
Value # 1: Learn How to Draw Letters by Hand

Lettering is a key foundation of traditional sign painting. Students practice various alphabets while developing an understanding of letter shapes, proportions, spacing, consistency, and how letters work together. These foundational techniques help students create clean, well-balanced, and professional hand-painted lettering as they build their overall sign painting skills.
Value # 2: Develop Basic Brush Stroke Techniques

A sign painter’s brush is an essential tool in mastering the craft. Students will learn fundamental brush strokes, movement, pressure, and control using Tempera Paint and Sable Brushes, which they will purchase after receiving the required materials list. With hands-on practice, students will build the control, consistency, and confidence needed to advance their traditional sign-painting skills.
Value # 3: Understand Layout Before You Paint

Students will learn why proper layout is essential to effective sign painting, understanding how lettering, spacing, proportions, and composition come together to create a balanced and attractive design. By planning and organizing each project before picking up the brush, students can approach their signs with greater purpose, accuracy, and confidence.
Value # 4: Learn the Craft Through Paper Signs and Hands-On Practice

Traditional sign painting involves far more than simply applying paint to a surface. Through paper signs, hands-on exercises, and consistent practice, students strengthen key skills in lettering, layout, composition, and brush control. These foundational techniques help build confidence, precision, and craftsmanship that students can continue developing beyond the classroom.
Value # 5: Build Skills That Continue Into the Next Semesters

The 1st Semester is a prerequisite for the 2nd Semester, giving students the opportunity to progress into the 3rd Semester. Each semester builds on the skills developed in the previous level and is priced separately, creating a structured, step-by-step learning experience for students seeking to build a strong foundation in traditional hand-painted sign work.
Master Traditional Sign Painting With an Experienced Sign Artist
Traditional sign painting is more than watching tutorials or learning lettering techniques from a screen. It is a hands-on craft that takes practice, patience, brush control, letter construction, spacing, and composition to create a balanced, professionally painted sign.
Led by Alex Kurakake, LA Trade Tech Sign Alumni and Hand-Painted Sign Artist, this course provides students with guided instruction and hands-on practice in traditional hand-painted lettering.
